KINETIC SS 24

A 15 LOOK COLLECTION PROPOSAL, IN COLLABORATION WITH MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ARTIST VINETA ROSE RENDLER

the following collaboration is a result of the artistic synergy between fashion designer nicole andrews, and multi-disciplinary artist vineta rendler. nicole and vineta are both heavily inspired by nature, but both recently became interested in the patterns, movement, and underlying proportions that inform its aesthetics. vineta, having a background in 3d modeling, laser-cutting intricate linework, and being well-versed in the phenomena of nature’s order - was able to nurture nicole’s newfound interest in nature’s rhythm and the limitless area of study at the intersection of art and science. conversely, nicole had the opportunity to expose vineta to the world of fashion design - including the process of design, textile science and natural dyeing, and sourcing unconventional materials.

the collaboration began with a simple exchange of words both were inspired by - exoskeletons, vertebrae, bone, cascade, harmony, etc. drawing upon this collection of words and images of inspiration - the two joined forces, ideating a spring/summer collection entitled “kinetic”.

our philosophy

we lead with the intention of participating with nature rather than interfering - we aim to be respectful observers, wholly present in our practice, and use natural dyeing techniques honor the vibrant quality of nature’s bounty. we ask ourseleves question such as - “how might we... elevate consciouness? expand curiousity? inspire our customers to pursue a new artistic practice? innovate with respect to our surroundings?” we are students of nature, and our customers are students of nature - we use fashion as a vehicle to explore these idiosyncrasies and the intricacies that are not necessarily visible upon first glance to a naked eye.

research objectives

01    explore the minuta of how different elements interact + coexist

02    identify the various ways patterns present themselves

03    investigate the phenomena of intelligent design

our research methodology includes diving into books that discuss fibonacci sequences, harmonic proportions, intersections of art and science, metal materials, and textile dyeing. naaliyah studios is also proposing that we conduct a series of hands-on experiments that will help us tap into our synesthesia (the experience of interplay between the senses) to confirm our hypothesis of all things being connected, inter-related, and inter-woven. these experiments will allow naaliyah studios to explore vineta’s resources, and vice versa - such as 3-D printers, mathmateical computation programs, and musical equipment to simulate our nature studies.

hello
a serendipitous connection - nicole’s suggestion for how to begin investigating our theme turned out to be vineta’s favorite book

design trends

silhouette + form

the return of minimalism amidst the recession, but with a modernized approach - playful use of structure, unconventional draping, and using form to create illusion. the layering of like-colored yet varied textiles gives garments intriguing dimension, as well as subtle sultriness.

textile

the resurgence of handcrafted methods - the proliferation of ai technology has shifted the pendelum in the opposite direction. consumers are curious about the traditional methods that came before them, and prioritize a tactile experience as the digital world seems to be ever expanding. from fabric manipulation to dyeing to creating handmade prints - there is a growing market for elevated minimalism that simultaneously affords the customer versatility, purpose, and expression.

imagery + details

borrowing from the elements of nature + objects around us, a surrealist take- the widespread shift towards sustainability and ecological preservation has led many brands to take inspiration from nature. however, there is a shift towards weathered/degraded materials and apololyptic aesthetics - reflecting the greater awareness of humanity’s impact on nature and its current declining state.

target market

we are targeting high income-earning women, who most likely work in a creative field and who are highly perceptive. these customers are well-versed in the arts, intentional with their time, and have a deep desire to expand consciousness and constantly acquire knowledge. these  thoughtful shoppers are willing to pay premium prices for high quality, eco-conscious, well-designed garments. they frequent flea markets to find hidden treasures, scour the internet for unique vintage pieces, and shop either curated boutiques or luxury retailers to source more newer designer pieces. they are interested in the stories of the designers they wear and gravitate towards shopping experiences that highlight the design process and and conceptual thinking behind garments.
